This coursework is aimed to meet the following expected learning outcomes:

• Know how to analyse engineering systems and products based on functional units and machine elements.

• Understand working principles, design, selection, and manufacturing aspects of machine elements.

4. QUESTIONS OF THE COURSEWORK


4.1 Question No.1 (20 marks)

Investigate the CNC machines at University of Greenwich. You are required to present and discuss about the main functional units and important machine elements of the CNC milling or turning machine at University. It is necessary to present and discuss about the functions, working principles and design requirements of these functional units and machine elements. 2D/3D sketching, images and photos can be used for the presentation and discussions when necessary.

4.2 Question No.2 (20 marks)

Present and discuss about the bearing, a typical mechanical element for friction reduction. Complete Table Q2 about advantages, disadvantages and examples of applications of the following bearings: Plain bearing, Ball Bearing, Cylindrical Roller Bearings, Tapered Roller Bearings, and Spherical Roller Bearings.

Present and discuss about the important design features and issues when designing a cam-follower mechanism

4.4 Question No.4 (25 marks)

Figure Q4 presents a gearbox that you are going to design. The input shaft rotates at n1 = 2000 rpm in a counterclockwise direction. The gearbox is required to be designed so that the output shaft rotates at n6 = 400 rpm (approximately).

The suggested module m for all gears G1, G2, G3, G4 and G5 is m = 2. The number of teeth and the pith diameter d of the gear G1 are 36 and 72 [mm] respectively. The provided data is summarised and shown in Table Q4.

 Requirements:

(1) Calculate and select the number of teeth N, pitch diameter d, rotating speeds n, base circle diameter Db, outside diameter Do, root diameter Dr, and write the results in Table Q4.

(2) Present the direction of the rotation of the output shaft.

(3) Explain in detail how to calculate and select these design parameters of the gear box.

4.5 Question No.5 (25 marks)

4.5.1 Question 5.1: Calculate an involute profile for a spur gear with the radius of a base circle r = 34 mm. Present the coordinates of 15 points on the 2D involute profile and generate the 2D involute profile in Excel as shown in Fig. Q5-1 (15 marks).
