This assignment is based on the September 19 and September 26 readings (7 articles), as well as the documentary film The Age of Stupid. Regarding the film, since you have a word-length restriction, it suffices to mention how it connects to your overall argument - don't go into any details. Essay length is 800 words.
Essay question: In this essay you are requested to compare and contrast two perspectives on the global economy, one arising from mainstream economics, and the other from ecology. According to the widespread perspective of mainstream economists and international business advocates, the growth of the global economy during the last 50 years has been an impressive success. We should expect even more growth in the future, which will further enhance prosperity and wellbeing for widening sectors of the global community. The combined expansion of open markets, judicious public policy and technological innovation will help address manageable problems of underdevelopment, poverty, scarcity of natural resources, and environmental deterioration. From this perspective, the advocates of "gloom and doom" are not only factually wrong, but they also are harmful since they discourage investment and innovation and negatively impact on economic growth. The second, ecological perspective, is exemplified by your readings of Brown, Gardner and Prugh. For this essay, summarize, contrast and evaluate key issues and arguments in this debate among the two perspectives. Where do you stand?
