This assignment requires you to plan and
design the database and user interface of an
information system for a given scenario. It also
requires you analyse and critique the
document your scenario is drawn from.
Choose one of the scenarios provided. Locate
the brochure corresponding to the scenario
from Blackboard. You need to carry out the
following fourtasks for your scenario.
Task 1: Database planning
Database planning: design an information
database prototype that can serve as an
information resource for the users in your
scenario. Your database plan should contain
the following components.
1. Information gathering.
2. Identify the entities/objects.
3. Use a visual modelling tool (like ERD’s)
to model the entities/objects.
Document your design in text andwith
diagrams (approximately 900 words).
Task 2: Interface design
Based on the principles discussed in the Learning object-Human Computer Interaction, design and document
a prototype of an interface for your proposed database (approximately 600 words).
• Providing three to five illustrations that show your interface design
• Align your design to the HCI design principles and discussing how your design relates to them
(design principles: visibility, constraints, feedback, consistency and affordance)
For further information about the Task 2 requirements, please download the Task 2 information pack.
Task 3: Information Analysis
You need to carry out a semiotic analysis of the
document your scenario is drawn from. Choose
two attributes from one of the three semiotic
disciplines of pragmatics, semantics and
syntactic and analyse the documentin terms of
these attributes (approximately 300 words).
Task 4: Critical thinking around global
Identify the industry sector that your scenario
is most closely identified to, for example travel
agent = tourism industry. Develop an informed
opinion about the impact of this industry sector’s operations in terms of one key global issue, e.g.
sustainability or culture (i.e. hastourism affected local indigenous cultures, if so how and why?). Present your
opinion, backing it up with evidence of your research (approximately 500 words).
Notes on formatting and structure
The written submission is to be formatted as a report, word-processed in 11 point font and 1 - 1.5 line spacing.
The word count does not include the executive summary, table of contents, appendices, introduction and
About the inf
SCENARIO A: Car Dealership
Your manager requires an information system to be designed
so they can keep track of the cars that they have on the lot.
Use the brochure that the car dealer uses to help you identify
the criteria required of a car database.
SCENARIO B: Financial advisor
You need to design an information system for a client to be
able to identify different loan options that are available from the
many different suppliers. The purpose of this system is so they
can make a better informed decision on who they will borrow
from. Use the provided brochure to help you identify some of
the loan options available.
SCENARIO C: Travel Agent
Your supervisor has requested that you design a new
information system about the different travel packages/
itineraries available. This info system should include identifying
key elements, like the accommodation, transport and meals
inclusions. Other additional travel options important to
potential travels should also be considered, for example group
size, personal budget requirements and traveller ratings. Use
the provided link to the brochure to help you identify the
different packages and options that are offered by your agency.
