You are required to select a particular social, economic, political or environmental issue and formulate a
question or problem statement in relation to how we understand this issue through popular media presentations. Be particularly
conscious of the media forms that frequently present this issue to the public as the subject for analysis. You will need to write a
critical analysis (magazine articles) of how the issues are presented, debated, and reconstituted within scholarly literature and
the public realm. You may use your imagination and also include popular literature, music, web sites, film, television, print
media, advertising media and radio, both commercial and independent venues as media forms as well as the five required
scholarly texts used for the research proposal (I will send you my finished proposal). The point of this assignment is for you to
immerse yourself in both your chosen
issue and the ways in which that issue is presented through vehicles relative to popular culture and mass communication. You
must also present these observations and interpretations in relation to current scholarly literature on the particular issue you
choose and on communications studies.
Learning Objectives - Upon completing this project you will be able to:
i) Identify a social issue presented in popular media and formulate a question or problem statement to be
explored through research and observation.
ii) Analyze the issue in terms of the dominant "voices" that present the issue and the agendas and biases inherent
in that representation.
iii) Analyze and evaluate differences and similarities between the "public perception" espoused by the media and
the scholarly discourse you find in the literature on the topic.
iv) Compare your analysis to theories of popular culture we have discussed in class (cite sources we have used).
v) Support a possible answer or resolution to your problem statement or question by using evidence you find in
the patterns you observe (in the media presentations) and the theories presented in the literature you are reading.
vi) Present your ideas clearly through professional quality writing.
vii) Develop a multimodal text using images and words to co-construct your argument.
