Hello, I am part of the impressionNITRO group, a new online company that will be launching itself alongside several of its own projects in the next few months. impressionNITRO is a group of three students, all of whom have great skills in English language. Choosing us to write articles for you will
give you the opportunity to have three high quality authors for the price of one. The following article was written as part of my A-Level assessment, it received an A* grade.
The Internet- Good or Bad?
One wire can link the exceptional machine that is your computer to another world. The
world of the Internet is full of information on every subject; it gives us great virtual leisure facilities and provides quick communication. Just over ten years ago, the Internet was virtually nonexistent to the majority of people. Today, the Internet has developed into the single most powerful
tool available to any walk of life, with almost 45 million people having access to the Internet in the UK alone. As with everything in the modern technological world, it has its flaws.
After the invention of the Internet there was a serious need for a medium to utilise the obvious potential of
the internet. Along came a search engine in Google which to this day remains the most popular search engine with 55% of online queries going through it. Along with several others Google grants users an answer to almost any question. If in an extraordinary situation you can’t find an answer, you
can simply enter a forum or chat room related to the question, ask away, and one of the Internet’s millions of users is almost certain to know the answer.
Of course being connected to millions of others doesn’t come without its downfalls. One day you will be quite happily downloading a new
hit single (legally of course) that you couldn’t find anywhere else. Or so you believe. The question you must ask yourself is “is this too good to be true?” The majority of the time, it is. Really you could be exposing your computer to millions of viruses. Computer Viruses get their name
because of the similarities with the medical term of the same name. A virus can do whatever its programmer wants it to, there are thousands of strains which are constantly changing and developing. The results of contracting a virus can be catastrophic as the virus totally destroys your computers
files leaving your computer broken beyond repair or sends valuable personal data to its creator. A complete stranger knowing every detail about you is potentially worse than having an obsolete computer. Credit card fraud is frequent on the internet and the risk of having your personal security
compromised is a big one to take. When deciding whether the internet is for you, weighing up the pros and cons is essential. While opening yourself up to a world of opportunities you are also taking a large risk.
The internet isn’t for everybody and while younger generations have been brought
up to use the internet as a tool, for older generations learning how to use it can be a scary prospect and to some it represents a new and confusing age of modern technology. On the other hand, while older generations find difficulty in understanding the world wide web, the younger generations have
used it to great effect and it is now a massive money making tool. The twenty three year old creator of Facebook over turned nearly $750 million for instance and values the site at fourteen billion U.S dollars.
The problem with staring into a screen is that it shows no proof of who you are
actually interacting with. They may not be who they say they are. Millions of people use the Internet every day and the majority are of the younger generation. Thousands of young people in one easily accessible place is a recipe for disaster. Paedophiles have been known to arrange meetings with
young girls, or ask them to expose themselves via webcam. This is easily avoidable but should definitely be considered by all potential web users; parents should monitor their children’s online behaviour. If necessary precautions are taken then these problems are easily overcome and child safety
is one of the biggest priorities online.
In conclusion I believe that the decision whether or not to use the internet is a large one, but after weighing up both the positives and negatives. It should be an easy one. While it is easy to understand why people would not want to put themselves at
risk with more and more people learning how to manipulate the internet for their own immoral means, the wide variety of opportunities the internet offers largely outweighs the risks. If the internet is used safely and properly and people take the necessary and advised precautions it’s no more of a
risk than crossing the road.
I hope you give impressionNITRO the opportunity to work with you; I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you.
