We interact with computer interfaces through all aspects of our daily lives - mobile phones, bank machines, information kiosks, appliance control interfaces, and via our personal computers and devices.? In each case, the interface has been designed for maximum efficiency and ease of operation - in addition to being designed to look good, perhaps to make a particular product more marketable.? ? In some cases, such as with PC media players, we can choose different interface designs to suit our own preferences.? During the course of this module, we have been discussing the physical technologies that facilitate such human-machine interfaces, and we have looked at some of the physical parameters that are associated with this.? There has also been discussion of effective icon design, screen design and screen layout.? For this assignment, you will be working with these design considerations to produce a prototype graphical interface for a selected application.

**1.** **Undertake background research** into your selected application to determine who the user population is likely to be; the physical environment and social/organisational context in which the application may be used; what information is to be conveyed; what, if any, systems may be controlled; and what objects would need to be included in the interface - such as video, images, sound, data tables, system status indicators, maps, etc.? Also, think about the physical size and resolution of the display screen that is likely to be used.? *You can assume that the screen will have a touch interface.*
**2.** **Write a design specification** for the interface based on your research, to summarise the requirements and propose the design rationale that you will use. (**max 4 pages**, including figures and sketches).
**3. Create a prototype** of **3** of the primary screens/pages of your interface.? To do this you can use any graphical design and layout package that you wish, such as Word, PowerPoint, Photoshop, Flash, Dream weaver, or a combination of these.
You are advised to start this exercise by creating a paper based mock up of the interface using sketches and storyboards to show how pages /screens would link together - think about the size of the display, resolution to be used, and how each screen should be structured for maximum usability.
**4. Submit your assignment as a hard copy printout of the 4 page design specification and the 3 prototype screens.**
