Background to Scouting in Avon
Avon Scout County is one of the largest in the UK and is the biggest single provider of non-school coeducational youth activities in the city-region. We provide more than 200 different activities for personal development on a weekly basis, organised across our network of infrastructure covering 9 Districts, 138 Scout Groups, 544 Sections for different age groups, campsites and activity centres. This stretches across Bristol, Bath, North and North East Somerset and South Gloucestershire. We have over 12,400 members and, to make this vast operation possible, rely completely on more than 4,000 amazing volunteers, 2,000 of which volunteer regularly. Scouting in the UK is more popular than ever with over 525,000 members and we’re all part of the world’s largest youth movement which has more than 35 million members in over 200 countries. We challenge and inspire young people aged 6-25 from all backgrounds to become the best people they can possibly be.
Our unique and progressive programme and the remarkable combination of benefits it offers through challenge, adventure, leadership, recognition and learning by doing can be found nowhere else. So, it’s not only a chance for young people to get muddy and have fun! Recent independent research found that 89% of young people and adults in Scouting believe it helped them to build ‘key skills’ including social skills, team working and leadership. External employers said that many key Scouting attributes such as respect for others, friendship, character building and personal development were very important in the workplace and that those who had been involved in Scouting were typically considered to be above-average employees across a range of attributes. Our continually growing success demonstrates that Scouting makes a huge difference, enriches lives, strengthens individuals and communities, and instills the habit of volunteering for life in the young. Not only do we offer extraordinary value for money, the return this investment makes on changing lives is unrivaled which is probably why Scouting is recognized as the UK’s most inspiring charity.
