Project Description:
We are interested in the creation of a SolidWorks model (Version SW2012 preferred, other versions if compatible with mesh generator) of the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at Idaho National Laboratory. The ATR is a research reactor featuring a complicated geometrical layout that will be explained in more details later in this project description. The SolidWorks model will serve as starting point for tetrahedral mesh generation for the numerical simulation of the ATR’s properties. For its envisioned usage it is paramount that the SolidWorks model is as faithful to the ATR as possible. While certain engineering approximations such as rounding (cusp-shaped) corners are acceptable and may be even beneficial for the stability of the subsequent mesh generation, retaining the details of the ATR’s fuel and control configurations is a must. For the application that we are interested in it is e.g. very important that the volume of the fuel in the SolidWorks model matches the volume of the original fuel content.
