Project Description:
We have a very simple game that is currently only built to run as an application on a local machine. This game needs to be recreated for Flash so that it can be run as a web application through a browser.
You can download the application here:
http://www2.psych.purdue.edu/~kip/cyberball/
We need you to recreate this game exactly as it exists now. Additionally, we would like to make a few enhancements. The game will be used in a school experiment. We will give it to students who will access it through a link in their web browser. We will host the game on our own server and specify the URL link for the students. The game will be played at the same time by up to 100 students.
Each game is played by a single human player who throws a ball with two or three other computer players. It is designed so that the human player thinks that other players are humans playing with him online. There is no multi-player engine.
Currently, to play the game you open the file “Cyberball.exe.” It then asks you to choose a settings file. Settings files determine how many players are in the game and how many times a player is thrown the ball by the other players. We need you to re-create the game so that two of the settings files can be played: CBData/settings/3pl – ostracize subject.txt and CBData/settings/3pl – all include.txt. In the “ostracize subject” file, the human player is only thrown the ball twice. In the “all include” file, all players are thrown the ball many times. We do not want players to select their own setting file. Instead, we want you to create the game so that players will be sent to one of these two settings files via a parameter set in the URL. [note that when you play, you will also be asked to give a subject id—we do not need you to re-create this feature. Instead we want the user id number to be automatically passed to the file by embedding it in the URL link].
This game is not meant to be fun and entertaining. We are using it for a science experiment. Please DO NOT make fun enhancements to the new version of this game. We want the new game to look almost exactly like the existing game. The only changes are (1) greater functionality that we specify below, (2) ability to be accessed through a web browser, (3) smoother animation of the cartoons in the game.
With regard to the smoother animation we would like you to recreate the images that currently exist. You can make them higher quality, and the movements should be smoother, but the general shape and motion of the cartoons should remain the same. Keep the speed of the game the same in the new version.
Currently when you play the game, it makes you pick a settings file. The new version will not have this. In the new version, the settings and the user id number will be determined by the parameters in the URL.
The URL link will contain various parameters that will determine how the game is presented and that identify the player. These parameters are listed in the attached document.
