Character Design to Vector from pen sketch

I have a client who needs a character illustration recreated as a vector illustration (compatible with Adobe Illustrator CS5. The original pen sketch has been scanned and is available as a PDF of the scanned image. We would need the character to be re-created as a vector illustration and coloured, so that it was editable, and we could amend the fill colours / gradients of each of the sections of the character (using the Live Paint bucket tool would be fine). The more professional-looking (using colour gradients etc.) the better.
