We have system that uses a customized build of Linux (based on SUSE, I think). The machine is used to view sets of image data. The way we scroll through sets of images is by pressing "page up" and "page down" on the keyboard; however, this is not very ergonomic. The mouse has a scroll wheel that is not recognized by the operating system. I do not have root access to the machine, and the people who do are not able to help.
1. Without admin privileges, get the OS to recognize scroll wheel on a USB mouse and write script that captures scroll event and sends it to the program as "page up" and "page down."
2. Talk me through doing this either through e-mail, chat, or on the phone. I have experience with Linux and writing code, but don't have the time to try to figure this out (don't know if it's even possible without root privileges)
3. Work will have to be done during off hours or weekends when the machine isn't being used for regular work.
