I need a Linux screensaver that displays my own images from a folder. It should deviate from the usual screensaver in four ways: (a) It should be compatible with the Raspberry Pi computer. Running via RaspBMC operating system is desired but not critical. (b) I need the option of changing images only once per day or once per week. (c) I need the option to display the image correctly on a vertically oriented (portrait mode) screen. (d) I need the screensaver to detect the screen size and crop the image if necessary so no bands of black space appear at the top/bottom or left/right.
Preliminary research has led me to the following guidance on writing Linux screensavers that may be useful to the programmer for my project: http://www.dis.uniroma1.it/~liberato/screensaver/
