My former roommate and I have been working for months to develop a smartphone app, but recently had to part ways with our app developer because his skill set was not up to the task. However, when we parted ways with our developer, we were able to secure the code for what he had finished so far. The current code is 90% done, maybe even more. All the graphics, UI, and back-end code is done, except for 1-2 small things. Frankly, a bit of de-bugging may be enough to solve our current issue.
Obviously, before I go any further, I want to make sure that anything I mention here is to be treated with confidentiality and implies consent to not compete with the product described below.
The app we are trying to develop is for both iOS and Android-equipped phones. It is an app that allows the user to record their location. We would also like for this app to have the capability to store updates and access data on the cloud. This cloud functionality was where our existing developer lacked the skills necessary to finish our project. His other problem was getting the app to record your location in the background (i.e. while the app wasn't open) without the operating system killing the app.
Our developer programmed in C#; however, Apple's iOS programming language is Objective-C. The developer did this because he wrote the code in Xamarin. We are open to using Xamarin to write the same code (for the most part) for iOS and Android. However, we understand that Objective-C is the native language for iOS, while Java is the native language for Android apps. We are open to hearing your thoughts on whether it is best to proceed in the native languages or if it's fine to stick with what we have so far in Xamarin (C#).
We would like to know the following:
1) What you would estimate it will cost to finish the development of the app using the existing code? This includes graphics.
2) What you would estimate it will cost to finish the development of the app using new code (Objective-C and Java)?
3) How long would it take to finish the development of the app under either of these scenarios?
The existing code, which includes graphics, is on a Dropbox folder. I will share the code once the developer has been selected for the project. Let me know if you would like to speak over the phone to discuss this further with my partner and me.
