I have a calculation requirement, which was originally modeled in Excel, yet I feel should now be migrated to a more suitable environment??"I have no strong opinion on what it should be-even Command Line is fine, providing it can support the following features. Attached to this project, is a simple .xls showing a pattern of numbers (it’s actually based on music harmony, but no music knowledge is required for the project, but we will probably stick with certain identifying names such as Scales and Chords for clarity). The first worksheet “Master?? shows a Scale in the first column, which is referenced by an organised matrix called ChordCombinations, with results that you can see in the second worksheet “ChordCombinations??. The Scale itself can be any length, from 1 to 50 digits, and can be entered in any numerical order, while the ChordCombinations pattern remains exactly as in the “Master?? worksheet (can this also be modified into 7, or even 8 digit combinations?). In the “ChordCombinations?? worksheet, from cell C107, we can input a range of Chords to search within the ChordCombinations matrix. At least 50 chords can be entered here, although I think the spreadsheet can support an unlimited range. In worksheet “SearchResults??, the Scale is recorded, along with the Chord that was searched, and finally, cell locations of matches identified ??" any combination of 3,4,5 or 6 notes from the Chord are regarded as matches. A new function we require is a Scale Lookup. That is, if the Scale has not produced a matrix of ChordCombinations which yield a full 6-note match, then we would wish a calculation to be made as to what the Scale properties should have been to make a 6-note match. An additional function from here would be to take all output results, and Scale Lookups for 6-note matches, and identify to 20, 15, 10, 5 most recurring Scales, together with a periodicity of when those Scales occurred (which Chord it matched in the Range). An output such as csv
