This is a different posting than is probably normal for this website. I am giving away this business idea for free to anyone who wants to run with it as I don't have the necessary website design skills, but I just want to see the website come into existence.
Economic times are hard right now and I spent a year submitting my electronic resume to literally hundreds of job websites and often, I didn't even receive a rejection email until a year and a half later. Going through this process gave me the idea for a website devoted solely to video resumes. Users would create a simple profile requiring only a name, email address and looking for work within x miles of a zip code. Users would then create a video showing each of their skills in a separate video where each one can be ranked by other users and receive constructive criticism for how their skills can be improved.
Employers would create an account and enter that they were looking for someone with a specific skill in their zip code. Then, they would instantly find the top ranked people with relevant skills that are looking for work in their zip code and can watch those same people explain their capabilities. Employers would pay $1 to get into direct contact with a potential employee. With millions or even hundreds or tens of thousands of people looking for work on the website, this would pay for the cost and companies would love to save huge amounts of money on job searches.
Posting for a single job on a jobs website can cost hundreds of dollars for a company and they just have to hope the right employee applies. Job seekers have to deposit resumes into the black hole of an electronic drop box where it will most likely be automatically filtered out of consideration and never seen by a human being. This website would excel in its ultra simplicity of directly connecting job seekers to employers with no other function and could possibly even be an open source collaborative project.
I would love for someone to make this website on their own as there are a lot of people struggling right now and the current methods of job searching sorely need to be shaken up.
