We are a group of students at the Johns Hopkins University looking to make a J2ME phone application which will facilitate the process of malnutrition assessments made by Doctors Without Borders in the developing world. We do not have the expertise to program such an application ourselves and would very appreciate professional expertise in working together to make such an application a reality.
Very briefly, the scenario in which the application would be used would be as follows:
A community health worker is given a phone with a malnutrition survey on a custom J2ME application. The worker would go into the field, collect measurements of the upper arms of children (a common diagnostic of malnutrition), enter the data into the phone, and at the end of the day, all the workers would place their phones next to a computer. The server side software, which would be situated locally on the home base computer, would have options to upload all the data collected during the day from the phones via bluetooth.
From the server side, health workers would also be able to make their own custom surveys and be able to upload them to the phone for subsequent assessments if so desired.
This application would save health workers several hours each day in time they spend to manually writing down and typing in all their data into the home base computer at the end of a day of assessments.
We have attached a flowchart indicating the functionality we are seeking for both the phone application and the local server.
One concern we had was whether or not it is possible for workers to turn bluetooth in the phones on and have the server side software automatically communicate with the phones one by one in turn without requiring user input to each phone. We want to make the application as simple as dropping all the phones in a bucket and letting the server software obtain all the data from the assessments automatically.
