Magento - gift certificate plugin not working with PayPal

Using Magento ver. 1.3.2.4

Gift card module in question:

When a customer tries to buy items and uses a giftcard everything is fine until you order for something more than the value of the gift card. Then if the customer chooses Paypal or our Invoice solution (Klarna) the value of the giftcard is removed and they have to pay the full sum as if it did not exist.

For instance, i have a gift certificate for 500 NOK and i purchase for 900 NOK. I then choose to pay the 400 NOK left with Paypal trough Magento checkout. When im sent to Paypal suddently the sum is 900 NOK again.

This is what a former coder mentioned when he worked on it and got it fixed (until changes was made on the shop and it stopped working again):

"i went through the paypal process and magento paypal variables. after a long research i came to know that discount is only work with the total amount of the product and without excluding shipping and tax amount.i ad a variable in gift certificate code in magento then remove tax amount from cart. after that discount is calculating in [url removed, login to view] can read the following article [url removed, login to view]"

We need this fixed so that customers can combine gift cards and card payment. And we are in a hurry.

PS: If you dont know magento and have no clue on how to do this please dont waste our time since this is something very important to us. Also do tests on a backup installed on your own server since our site is live and we dont want to shut it down or have any misshapps on it making it shut down or worse. Also we have some other database related problems with adding new giftcards etc that we could use some help with. If the one being awarded this task does a good job ther is a good chance to get some more tasks in the future.
