My hosting provider HostGator, took the site down today due to the server load from the PHP front end communicating with the MySQL backend.
Here's what they think the problem is...
When looking into this issue on your behalf we do not advise a move to a higher level VPS server as without proper optimization the VPS platform is not sufficient resource wise in order to continue to address the extremely resource intensive mysql queries that are seen in this case.
As such we would strongly recommend looking into indexing large or frequently accessed tables or pruning old, out of date or unneeded information from the effected database, in addition the queries in use may be able to be modified to return less broad results.
Once you believe you have addressed this resource usage issue please reply to this ticket with a description of the changes made in order to bring resource usage under control and we would be happy to re-evaluate your account in order to remove all restrictions as long as no additional resource usage issues exist.

Resolving this situation may be as simple as adding additional indexes to your database, optimizing the queries used, or something equally easy. If not, it may simply be a matter of moving this database to dedicated services, as it may have outgrown a shared environment.
