There’s an excellent Magento template used by this website I would like to use for my own store:
I found out they were using Magento by looking at the CSS file. There is a line in there that says “@package default_modern” if that helps. Since I am still new to Magento, I don’t know if this template is a custom job they did for this site or if its just part of something I can download from the library of themes/templates.
I've done a lot of work with Wordpress and I'm very familiar with how it all works even down to a code level on some parts, but Magento is totally new to me.
This template I'm wanting for my new store seems very simple and straightforward to me and I don't understand why something like it is not already available to download from the Magento community along with the many other templates that seem to focus more on looks and less on sales. It's desirable to me because I know this particular layout sells very well.
After you close out the opening splash image they have there at tspmint.com, I'm basically wanting this exact layout. White background, banner across the top on the home page, below that is a configurable set of products that will most likely be the top sellers so people can get straight to what they want in 1 click from the home page. Under that is a newsletter sub and below that is the standard footer.
The product layout pages are key in how they display everything. There's an optional banner graphic across the top - then the product layout is so large, clean, and easy to read and understand I've simply not seen this with any of the other templates I've looked at. It baffles me why there aren't other templates doing this (or are they and I just haven't seen them?) Anyway, they have a "Sold So Far" counter which can also be an inventory countdown to urge people to buy now or else stock will run out. Under that, the product details, price, quantity and all that. To the left are the large product photos and under that are different views. Then under all of that is the sales copy area with a video, text and Facebook commenting so people can ask questions, etc. right there on the page.
Then of course they have some regular content pages with no store content at all. The layout of these is done very well too.
Anyway, all of this is exactly what I'm looking for in a template I can use in a variety of stores. Normally I use Wordpress for all my sites, but I think a store is probably too much for it and I turned to Magento after I saw that is what these guys were using.
