Project Description:
I'm building a WordPress site for a research lab at the University of Toronto and need a plugin that will let us auto-populate new posts with Title, Abstract, Author and Citation information based on a PMID number that links to the PubMed database. We want to be able to easily enter publication information for multiple papers into the site and the best way to do this is by using the PubMed ID (PMID) that is assigned to all pubs when they are indexed on PubMed.

For example, if you search for a recent paper from our group, such as, A bacterial acetyltransferase destroys plant microtubule networks and blocks secretion, you will see the PubMed ID below the abstract (PMID:22319451). The nice thing is you can get this information directly by putting the PMID directly in the URL, such as:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22319451?report=medline&format=text

From this page you can extract the following:
TI - A bacterial acetyltransferase destroys plant microtubule networks and blocks
secretion.
AB - The eukaryotic cytoskeleton is essential for structural support and intracellular
transport, and is therefore a common target of animal pathogens. However, no
phytopathogenic effector has yet been demonstrated to specifically target the
plant cytoskeleton. Here we show that the Pseudomonas syringae type III secreted
effector HopZ1a interacts with tubulin and polymerized microtubules. We
demonstrate that HopZ1a is an acetyltransferase activated by the eukaryotic
co-factor phytic acid. Activated HopZ1a acetylates itself and tubulin. The
conserved autoacetylation site of the YopJ / HopZ superfamily, K289, plays a
critical role in both the avirulence and virulence function of HopZ1a.
Furthermore, HopZ1a requires its acetyltransferase activity to cause a dramatic
decrease in Arabidopsis thaliana microtubule networks, disrupt the plant
secretory pathway and suppress cell wall-mediated defense. Together, this study
supports the hypothesis that HopZ1a promotes virulence through cytoskeletal and
secretory disruption.

So, we need a plugin that automates this process and formats the output into an attractive WordPress post with each section labeled: Title, Abstract, Authors (formatted into a paragraph separated by commas), Citation (in this format: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/policy/cit_format.html)

Bottom line - it should be pretty straightforward to enter publication information and then edit the post as needed afterward.

The plugin will help us create the posts, but once created the content should live within the post and not require re-loading from the PubMed database. That is, it should not dynamically update every time the page is loaded. Rather, once the post is built it should be editable like any other post. Run once and forget about it...

Finally, we are not looking for an exclusive license for this plugin. One you build it, feel free to sell it to others or post online as you wish.
