If the acronyms TEI and MEP are familiar to you, you'll probably make sense of my request. I would like to have a document type definition (DTD), "[login to view URL]", modified by adding or reworking a few elements.
The Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) is a world-wide project to promote and define guidelines for electronically encoding all kinds of textual material. The Model Editions Partnership (MEP) has built on this foundation with particular emphasis on specifying best practices for publication of scholarly editions.
The DTD named above is an outcome of these joint efforts. It can be modified as needed, and this is what I would like to have done. Specifics follow in the information below.
## Deliverables
A Zip file of the MEP-TEI DTD is attached. The file holds comments stating that modifications are to be done only as specified in the TEI Guidelines, which are available at http://www.tei-c.org. Some comments in the DTD say "Do NOT modify this DTD file directly! Modify document MEP W04 and regenerate the DTD!" (Alas, this instruction means little to me.)
I'm requesting these seven modifications:
Let the <signed> element permit <note> elements
Let the <closing> element permit <note> elements
Let the <note> element permit <p> elements
Let the <p> element accept a new element called <firstLine>
Let the <p> element accept new <left> and <right> elements
(these three new elements would need a short list of common attributes)
Let the <docBody> element accept a new element called <extract> that might span several paragraphs
(this new element might need a longer list of attributes)
I look forward to working with someone skilled in these techniques!
