Project Description:
We have text files that contain hourly data on traffic volume on a highway. Each file covers a year's worth of data and we have 10 such files. The text file is organized as a vertical stack of weekly reports. Each report has a header identifying the week, location, data source etc and so the headers are largely repititive. Of interest are the hourly counts which are presented below the header. The columns represent individual dates and the rows represent hours (24 rows in all.) The row labels identify the hour (e.g. "1-2") and the column labels identify the date (e.g. "FEB 18"). Each report ends with a footer that has various summary statistics. Sometimes, the hourly data are missing (blank) and usually the hourly data number is followed by a letter (e.g. "A") which denotes the relevant stretch of the highway. We only care about the hourly traffic volume number for each date in the data. We would like a clean text file that has 3 columns: date (ddmmyy), hour, traffic volume.

Additional Project Description:

The weekly reports can come from different locations (traffic stations) for the same week. We would like to keep track of the traffic station number and the number of lanes (also in the header.) Therefore the final product should have: date, hour, traffic station number, lanes, traffic volume.
