We are interested in establishing a working relationship with a
competent unix programmer that is interested in developing new tests
for an existing test framework, and eventually, possibly take over
maintainance of the test framework.
You need to have considerable experience with with writing unix
shell scripts. Some Perl knowledge will also be beneficial.
We have a large, fully functional, test framework in place that
is used to test internally developed software.
This framework consists of several hundred different tests for
multiple products, primarily written in Bourne shell and perl, with
some awk code too.
The test framework has been developed in-house, as have all the
tests, by staff who are still working for the company. There will
thus be someone you can ask questions of and who will provide help
There is no GUI involved in this. All tests and all output is
text-based, as are the products being tested.
The basic procedure when using the test framework is to specify
on the commandline what test to run, let the test framework run
the test, and look at the results. The results will indicate success
or failure. In case of failure, what failed will also be shown
with enough details for debugging to start.
After having been written, tests are mainly run in an automated
manner, where all or a subset of the tests are executed. A summary
is then mailed out showing the status of the tests. The developers
will usually then re-run the tests that are failing manually to
debug any problems that are noted in the summary mails.
More details will be provided to interested candidates, perhaps via
a video/skype conference with the main test developer.
The initial task will be to develop a few smaller tests for a HTTP
server. Initially you will develop and run the tests you write
on your own machine.
We imagine the initial task will take around two-three months, working around 20-40% of fulltime,
somewhat depending on how independent you will be able to work and how much time we have
available to provide guidance and explain things. Also so we know you have read the project
description and are not just junkmailing us and everyone else here, please indicate in the first
line of your reply whether you are most familiar with Perl, Awk, or Python.
If you are interested, please reply with a one-page CV listing
your previous experience and competence.
With kind regards.
