Reading a bedtime story is one of everyday ritual to establish closeness with a child, but also a way that stimulates wish of the child to go to sleep. However, we should carefully choose the stories, as well as a method of talking.
Beautiful stories are ideal at the end of the day before going to sleep. Children often want the same story repeated a thousand times. For small children (two to seven years) fairy tales are the best choice: reality becomes magic, items have a "soul", because children at this age can not think logically.
Reading the stories should be a ritual, like washing hands.
How and where to tell the story? In a warm room, without excessive explanation (fairy tale is an emotional experience), with a child on our knees, in bed or hold the child's hand. Our voice needs to be somewhat mysterious (to show them that we also believe in the story), with pauses and repetitions when the child asks for it. Reading the stories should be part of the ritual, such as bathing or feeding. It is a way to associate with our child, and in addition develop their imagination and curiosity.
