Identify a scenario from a real-life or a fictional work organisation that demonstrates interactions between individuals and provides an example of one of the behaviours or skills studied in this unit for weeks 1-9, for example, Perception and Decision-making or Conflict Handling.
You will then need to:
Describe the scenario
Remember, the reader will not be familiar with your chosen work organisation so you will need to provide details of the context, for example, company and department. You will need to describe the function, level or position of the people involved and to provide brief details of their characters (a table is often useful). It is recommended that your scenario involves a maximum of 5-6 people or your analysis is likely to lack the necessary depth.
Person Position Character
AB Line Manager Sociable, Extrovert. A rather authoritarian manager
CD Customer services assistant Quite introverted, friendly, polite, conscientious
EF Customer services assistant Inexperienced but a quick learner, bubbly extrovert, chatty
GH Customer services assistant Sociable, experienced, informal leader
Then you will need to describe exactly what happened and what was said in your chosen scenario. Again, a table is useful to present verbatim transcript of the interactions
Person Transcription of interactions
AB “What was said”
This can go in an Appendix to the report if necessary so as not to limit your analysis.
Describe the theory (ies)
Demonstrate your understanding of relevant theories as covered in the unit and your wider reading around the subject area. For example, if your report is about conflict handling you might wish to discuss the conflict process. If your report is about perception, you might use Attribution Theory and discuss some of the shortcuts associated with perception of others. If you are basing your report on other topics covered you will, of course, need to use theory(ies) appropriate to that topic.
Application of Theory and Analysis
Apply the theory(ies) to your chosen scenario and THINK!! Undertake an in-depth analysis of the interactions observed in your scenario based on the theory(ies). What does this suggest? For example, what shortcuts were used (in perceiving others) and how did this influence the outcome? Or, why was the conflict handling style inappropriate? This will form the main part of your report.
What conclusions can you draw from your in-depth analysis?
You will need to make clear recommendations for improvement based on the theoretical application and analysis and advise the company on how this might be implemented.
Your analysis must be 1500 words in length (+/- 10%) presented in report format, fully referenced throughout the report, with a comprehensive reference list providing full bibliographic details of sources cited using the Harvard style.
In the Assignments section of the course site you find a link to Turnitin:
Click on the link and under ‘Author’ scroll down to find your name. Enter an appropriate title for your assignment then upload using the Browse function. When you are certain this is correct ‘submit’. This submits your work to plagiarism detection software and usually within 24 hours a report will be generated on the originality of your work. A similarity index of 20% or higher is too high and you will need to view the report and revise your work. You may submit multiple versions of your work up to the deadline (later versions overwrite previous submissions). You must formally submit a hard copy to the Assignment Office and retain your receipt.
