Assessment Task 1: Research
You will need to present your findings in an essay format, and reference all information sources. The essay must have numbered pages and the evidence must be in order as specified. You need to include photos and/or diagrams if appropriate. The assessment must be submitted via the GCTA Learning Centre.
From the researched oils, choose and design your own blends of aromatic oils for the following conditions: relaxation, stress reduction, skin care, and headache. Choose, and design a treatment plan for one of the conditions. The blends must include aromatic oils, carrier oils and/or additives. Design your own instructions for use for salon treatment and home use (for clients), storage and handling.
You will need to provide the following evidence:
common name, botanical name, plant family and characteristics for each aromatic plant oil, such as properties, profiles (profiles must include chemo types, extraction method, color and odor characteristics), solubility, effects and benefits, possible adverse effects, beneficial interactions of oils;
uses of each for beauty treatments;
describe the difference between aromatic oils, carrier oils, and additives;
properties and characteristics of the carrier oils and additives, and beneficial interactions with aromatic plant oils (eg. therapeutic uses, and chemical composition), and identify and evaluate other mediums that may be used as alternatives to carrier oils;
safety required when storing and handling aromatic oils (eg. MSDS, and manufacturer instructions);
ratios of aromatic plant oils to carrier oils, and additives;
processes affecting chemistry of aromatic plant oils (eg. oxidation process)
describe how are the aromatic oils, carrier oils, and additives are absorbed through the skin (eg. anatomy and physiology of the skin, and skin structures, as they relate to percutaneous absorption), and through the olfactory system;
possible skin sensitivity and allergies to aromatic plant oils;
uses of aromatic plant oils in beauty treatments;
chemical terminology must include: isoprene unit, aliphatic molecule, terpene and terpenoid compound, monoterpene and sesquiterpene, monoterpenol and sesquiterpenol;
identify emulsifiers and dispersants for aromatic plant oils;
benefits of the blends, and why you have chosen the specific oil combinations;
other possible therapeutic benefits of the blends;
briefly describe application methods (vapor, compress and poultice) for the aromatic oils and the blends
