is the bid for all 40 articals.or per artical. i have written an artical for your review. i feel it is current due to the release of frances Griffiths book by way of her daughter this year Cottingley Beck By Melissa Kurtz July 2009 In 1917 during WW 1 a little village in England called Cottingly discovered something that people always imagined existed but were afraid to believe in, fairies. Two young girls Elsie 16 and Frances age 9 not only saw them but had a rare chance to photograph them. In the back yard along the beck (English word for stream). Younger Frances fell in while splashing she noticed something shimmery and upon closer inspection Frances saw what she believed to be a water sprite. The girls spent numerous days at Cottingly Beck searching for the fairies. Upon one of the girl’s idea the two of them took Elsie’s fathers new camera to the beck and took two of five photographs depicting the fairies. The first a picture of Frances watching a group of fairies dancing, the second a gnome Mr. Bandyleggs conversing with Elsie. Furious at the prank Mr. Wright took the camera and the pictures and forbid the girls use the camera again. In 1919 while at a seminar on the existence of fairy kind Ms. Wright mentioned the pictures her daughter and niece had taken a few years earlier to Edward Gardner. Mr. Gardner was fascinated with the idea and got copies of the pictures from Polly Wright. . Mr. Gardner provided the girls with cameras convinced that the girls had spiritual powers that made the fairies appear to them. The result was three more photographs containing the girls and fairies. The pictures were examined by several photographic experts to include specialist from the Kodak Company and they all concluded that the negatives and prints were not tampered with; however the Kodak Company did not want to admit to the existence of fairies so they would not certify the photographs. The Strand magazine published an article “An Epoch Making Event, Fairies Photographed” while the writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle changed the names of the children People from all over England wanted to find the girls and see the fairies for themselves. The hype about the girls and the fairies grew and their news shadowed the news of the war. In 1922 Conan Doyle published a book “The Coming of the Fairies” a far different style than the Sherlock Holms Mysteries he was famed for but still a mystery of sorts. Were these fairies real? Arthur believed they were. Upon Elsie’s death in 1983 she said that the pictures were fakes and that the girls made them with cutouts and faceted them with hat pins. Frances insisted till her death on July 11, 1986 that at least one of the pictures was real. Most of the people of Cottingly say Elsie wanted to protect the beck and the fairies so she said they didn’t exist. Locals still say they see fairies at Cottingly Beck and even have a website http://www.cottingleyconnect.uk.org where you can see the pictures taken by Elsie and Frances and see pictures of the town and the beck today. The web page contains poetry from the town’s people about the fairies and current issues facing the town one in particular a writer named Denise is noteworthy and inspiring ,she reminds us that fairies are hope, they help us believe in things magical. In a cyber age of all things high-tech it is comforting to know you can still believe in things even though you may not be able to see them at least without the help of Frances and Elise. I as a parent can tell my six year old daughter that At least in Cottingly Beck fairies still exist.
