Hardware design and software development needed for a networked wifi module. Each module will provide a wifi hotspot and be networked together with other modules via a mesh network. Internet connectivity will be provided by a laptop computer connected to the mesh.
If preferred, the inter-module mesh connectivity can be implemented via non-wifi (e.g. zigbee), but in this case, the module would still need 802.11 wifi for the hotspot.
The modules should be as low cost as possible and should be physically small (for example the system should fit in a 50mm cube) and run from standard rechargeable AA or AAA batteries.
The module should have GPS capability, and a location report will be triggered remotely via the laptop.
The processor used should be capable of being extended for simple GPIO.
In your proposals, please specify what hardware you would suggest for this purpose. Specify the approximate hardware cost and power requirements of the module components.
Preferably software will be written in C. For the software, please specify what languages and tools you would use and what components of the software you will implement are off the shelf or will be written from scratch.
