A data upload/import facility is required to import company and contact data into an existing browser-based (IE5.5+) CRM application. This facility must be able to import data exported from Outlook 97 onwards (CSV format) plus data entered into a single, pre-defined Excel spreadsheet template. The facility must take the format of a user friendly wizard.
The import tool should enable the user to select and upload a data file (CSV or Excel). The file will then be analysed and a report detailing the number of valid and non-valid records shown to the user, after which, the user can import the valid records. An Excel file containing the non-valid records will be generated programatically with the aid of a third party .Net component so that the user can make changes to the data and re-upload the file.
This must be developed using ASP.Net (C#) with Framework 1.1 and 2.0 in mind. The web application uses a SQL Server database with tables for both Companies and Contacts, as well as various lookup tables. The Data Upload Wizard must be flexible enough to allow imports to transfer data to differently structured databases. This is because there are bespoke installations of the web application based on the same code but with different back-ends. Also, the Data Upload Wizard must be forward thinking so that it can handle imports of data that is not just company or contact details.
