We currently own some content. It is petrol-pricing information. It is coming from an online XML feed. What the required software needs to do is be constantly monitoring the XML feed, and if anything changes in the XML database, further action occurs. What I mean by further action is, the software compares the changes in the XML feed to a database of users (mySQL database), and if a certain criteria is met, an email is sent to that user.
It sounds simple, and it really is, it is not a big project. The most important parts are that it has to be reliable and efficient. Expect a user database of around 40,000 users, so every time the XML feed changes, it needs to compare the changes in the XML feed to the 40,000 users, to see if any further action needs to be taken.
Like I say, the XML feed holds data on petrol-pricing information in a geographic area. What the software does is, if the XML data feed changes, it compares those changes to user’s in the mySql database. If the area they reside in corresponds to the area in the XML feed that has had a change (this is compare by post code/zip code), it alerts that particular user via an email.
- The software must be running all the time, and constantly monitoring the XML feed for changes; if something does change, software must respond as quickly as possible.
- It would be up to you as to which platform to use; it would be preferred however, if it could be built on Windows technologies, if possible, Microsoft web technologies (i.e. ASP.Net), although I am not quite sure if it is possible to accomplish such things with ASP.NET.
- The application will live on a web server – a windows web server, owner by our web hosting company. It will obviously have a mySql database on the same web server, and the XML feed is coming from an external server.
