There was a time when stories of misguided youth seemed far removed from our everyday living. Now, we witness the calamity first hand as it occurs in our own communities.
My rewrite:
We lived quietly among our families, our friends, and in our communities; sparing small thought for seemingly distant strife and struggle of damaged youth. Our peace is shattered; it is well past time we answer this rush to ruin.
