I have lots of experience with embedded microcontroller SCADA and monitoring devices. For my last employer I was in charge of developing the software for a complete monitoring and control solution for the industrial market. The system included several sensor boards (temperature, ph, voltage, humidity, current, etc..), relay/sensor boards and embedded computer systems with RS232, bluetooth, wifi, 900mhz/2.4ghz RF, and GSM connectivity.
I was in charge of developing the C code that runs on the sensor and reload boards / microcontroller. The sensor boards/microcontroller were responsible for reading the analog values from the sensor, and it also communicated with an embedded computer using the MODBUS protocol over RS232/RS485/Bluetooth connections. The MODBUS protocol was also used to write to registers which controlled relays on the boards. The boards could also be setup so that it constantly monitors a sensor, and turns a relay on/off depending on the sensor value.
I was also in charge of developing the python/twisted code that ran on the embedded computers which made MODBUS queries to the sensor boards, and uploaded the data to remote web servers.
I have some pictures of the kind of devices and web services I have used, worked and developed. Oh, and I also have video of my recently finished arduino/sheevaplug/zigbee powered remote controlled robot.
