Project Description:
Lessons and practice test items for online reading comprehension course.Seeking exceptional writers with thorough knowledge of English reading comprehension to create original lessons and practice items for an online test prep course. Writers must have educational writing experience in this area and preferably teaching experience.
The course prepares adults for the MTEL Communications & Literacy Reading subtest, a standardised test in reading comprehension (approx. middle school level). A course outline has already been created with learning objectives defined for each lesson. Test objectives can be found at http://www.mtel.nesinc.com/.
There are two parts to this project and the work will be divided up appropriately – please quote for the area in which you are most suited to/interested:
1. Lessons and practice for 2 modules (9 lessons and 84 practice questions in total).
See attached Reading Comp Lessons.doc for list of lessons. Each lesson should be approximately 500-700 words long. Writers will be expected to source and use appropriate examples (from copyright-free texts), suggest visuals if necessary, and document all sources used. Practice questions require detailed answer explanations.
2. Practice Tests
We require 3 full-length practice tests that simulate the difficulty level and format of the MTEL Comm & Lit exam.
The Comm & Lit test consists of 6 reading passages with 7 questions on each (42 questions in total). Sample practice test:

For each question, the reference answer should be specified, and an explanation should be given as to the logic and reasoning behind the choice. This reasoning should include arguments as to why the other answer choices are incorrect or inappropriate.
Writers will be expected to source reading passages (from copyright-free texts) for the practice tests.

I am a teacher, with a certification in reading/Intensive Reading. I have taken several reading courses (how to teach reading) and have taught Intensive Reading. I have been an English teacher for nine years. My MS is in Education, with an emphasis on brain-based learning, and distance education.
I would be most interested in the first part of the project. I have experience writing for a textbook company, freelance. (Houghton Mifflin). I wrote tests and workbook study guides for them, as well as author bios and the questions for the textbook selections (at the end of each textbook story). I believe I could have this done in three weeks, but am willing to speed it up to fit any deadlines you impose.
I am a teacher out on summer break, so I do have time!

I am bidding on the practice test component of the project, where I can apply my experience creating and administrating multiple choice comprehension materials. Perhaps even more importantly - since a practice test is, at core, a tool for learning - I have gobs of experience ?talking down? anxious and sometimes indignant students when they get ornery (as they inevitably do) about the correct-answer explanations.
