I am currently working on a J2EE product catalog/e-commerce solution. It is not tailored for a vertical market, but can be customized and extended as such. I use it as framework to power a live product catalog and other implementations are planned later this month. Your project could be based on such a configurable e-commerce framework...otherwise a huge development effort. Technology used: - Tapestry and Sitemesh for the web application - Hibernate for persistency My framework uses a separate webapplication for each store (or what you call user). But the applications share the same codebase and even the same .war file, if deployed to the same application server (tested with Tomcat, JBoss). All customization and user data is stored outside the .war. Current main feature list: - Highly customizable products (web based attribute definition) - Unlimited images for each product - Image management with upload (bulk/single), resizing, rotation, watermarking, annotations, ... - Product categories 3 level deep, with images, availability and other attributes - Export and reporting into Excel and PDF Although the focus is on the product catalog, the framework also offers marketing and collaboration features (such as client list, event calendar, marketing campaign support).
