Modify Existing Java/MySQL Program to Add New Features

Project Description:
We have an existing program that was coded that negotiates with a SMS gateway through HTTP & SMPP protocols.This program passes information between the two and performs logic on incoming and outgoing messages.
We need to add a few modifications and changes to ONLY the logic part of the program, which is written in Java and uses a MySQL database. You are required to modify the existing software and make the changes/additions requested.
The changes are not much, it should be an easy project. The only hard part will be skimming the code to learn how the program is operating already. We have a design doc as well as a FAQ written up that describes the flow of the original program so this will help you accomplish that.
My previous developer is unavailable so that is why we are looking for another developer at this time.
