Vladimir Gil A comparison and contrast of the structure of mesenchymal and epithelial cells. by Mahmud U Nabi Abstract: Mesenchymal cells have a unique morphologic structure and features that allow them to be transformed into any other type of cell tissue. For this reason, they have been called pluripotent cells. Mesenchymal cells bear a special attractiveness to researchers and scientists as they open new vistas for applied medicine as much as for theoretical anatomy and cytology. Epithelial cells are one of main tissues of the organism. We are so interested in them because they can trigger a process called epithelial-mesenchymal transition which is reversible in character. These types of cells have given food for thought to many people that have initiated campaigns for and against new technologies and directions in the cellular study which promises to be the most potential and inspiring study in the next 10 years. At the outset of our research paper, we should try to give definitions to these two types of cells: mesenchymal and epithelial cells; and specify their structures and roles in our human organism. If we are successful at this, we can later on easily track down the similarities and differences thereof, giving an apt comparison and contrast between these fundamental types of cells. I believe we will do it right if we start with mesenchymal cells – these foundational blocks of any organism. Mesenchymal cells are cells found in organisms during the first stages of their development. Basically, they are non-specialized, mobile cells ready to be evolved in any type of human tissue. Mesenchymal cells, also known by the name of neural crest cells, are derived from ectoderm, and serve as foundational blocks to various structures of the developing organism. Such vital organism tissues like connective tissue, bone, teeth, blood and plasma cells, cartilage, the endothelial lining of the vessels of the lymphatic and circulatory systems, smooth muscle and connective tissue are all derived from this type of cells. Let us now move on to their structure. Mesenchymal cells are shaped like small stars, having an oval-shaped nucleus, and almost no cytoplasm. Widely spaced, they have considerable extracellular space in between. A dense intercellular matrix fills this space. But what’s probably so amazing about them is mobility of the cell. Mobility by crawling amoeboid-like motion is characteristic. Mesenchymal cells are not differentiated or d  less
