I am a tour guide and want to commission an app for the ipad mini. This will be loaded onto just ten ipad minis, which I will supply to my customers at the beginning if each tour. The app will not be available on the App Store and is not intended to be accessible to the general public..
Many museums and galleries have multimedia audiovisual tours whereby the visitor learns about an object/painting by entering a relevant number onto a handset. They then typically hear audio and maybe see some video related to the object.
I want to make the ipad mini into such a device, but one that will work in the street. As the guide will still be doing all the talking there is no need for audio, just photos and video clips.
When informed by the guide to enter a particular number at a particular location, this will take the viewer to a per-determined slide in the app. The slide will either show a photo or a video clip. Slides containing video clips must play automatically.
The idea is that the iPads will augment the walking tour that I will be giving by enabling me to show photos and videos related to the subjects I am talking about. So, essentially, I need a very low-tech app which functions as a photo album whereby people browse by code numbers, which the real-life tour guide gives to them during the tour. It has to be idiot-proof, which shouldn't be difficult as the concept is straightforward
I envisage the app consisting of just three different screens.
Key Pad Screen
A calculator-like key pad containing nice big numbers from 0-9 and a BACKSPACE and ENTER key.
Above this, a calculator-like display showing the number entered.
Video Slide Page
Automatically plays a short video in full screen. When this finishes, the app should automatically return to the Key Pad Screen.
Photo Slide Page
Displays a photo in full screen mode.
Has a large, prominent "Return to Menu" button which returns to Key Pad Page when pressed.
Uploading new content
The app will need to enable me to add new photos and videos from time to time and assign these to new number codes. I need to be able to do this myself, (rather than having to ask the app developer to do this for me). Perhaps this could be achieved in a backoffice section of the app.
My aim is to have the app work with no reliance on being connected to the Internet. Ideally, it would not require any connection to the internet at all. All content therefore needs to be stored locally on each ipad as opposed to being pulled from a server. This would mean that new content would need to be added manually to each device. This would not be a problem for me.
