Magento addition of serial number for downloadable products

Project Description:

I am using Magento to deliver downloadable software.

However, I have user accounts turned off completely (using google checkout or paypal for payment). The download link sent in the "order email" contains a shared link so that the user can access it without logging in. That part is being handled properly by Magento at this point in time.

However, each software download needs a serial number. I can write a script to generate serial #'s based on product #, qty, first and last name, and order #.

But I want an easy set up like this integrated into the Magento software so that it is seamless for me and the user as well. They should get an e-mail with their serial #'s. Also, I want a way for them to retrieve "lost" serial #'s easily by typing in their e-mail.
