Choose a sunny location where the herbs will receive at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. Herbs such as oregano, rosemary, parsley and thyme are all native to the Mediterranean and require the brightest sun and warmth. Herbs native to North America like lavender, marjoram and dill can tolerate cooler temperatures. This is the first primary essential for a practical herb garden. Get the dirt Another important essential for herb gardens is good, rich soil. Herbs need soil that is rich in organic matter. Add compost and till the soil to allow air to penetrate it.
