Project Description:

Automotive Search Engine

Synopsis:

Similiar to a metacrawler.com, this project requires the compilation of search results from
leading automotive classified sites.

Features:

The ability to search by zip code, year, make, model, and mileage.

The data retrieved should include at least the following:
Year
Make
Model
Price
Mileage
ZipCode
One Piece of Sellers Info (phone, email, dealership name)
URL TO ADVERTISEMENT

Sites to include in compilation of results:
cars.com
autobytel.coom
autotrader.com
autoweb.com
ebaymotors.com
autos.yahoo.com
carsdirect.com
carpoint.com
carmax.com
(design of the compilation engine should be scalable such that we can add additional sites)

When searches are performed, the compilation engine will cache the results in the database for future searches. This will be an effort to archive results as well as improve performance in the short term for searchers.

Technologies:

MySQL database
Linux Environment

    Hi,

We did such a project for finding TV shows in the past, and it took us 5 weeks to debug it till the point it worked without problems (almost) - we did have some problem in certain parts where we could not separate the data to different fields for the computer has no brains.... but in your case things are easier. About 18 months later the station changed the layout and that was it.... we now have an idea to make it more maintainable.

Your case is much easier (some of the data as specific patterns) and we suggest generic way for it to be done -
regarding the site you want to use - some have some have add banners inside the results like autotrader.com - It make things little harder

but all in all if you change the budget to over 2500$ we will provide you with analysis of what should be done to make it work, and may be do some basic demo so you can see we know what we are talking about

The result of the project is a tool that you use with any required site to create the scrapping rules that are then used to get info from the other sites

P.S. you should take care about all the legal copyrights etc.

Hello everybody, yes I anticipated a bid raise. Wanted to get feedback first.

jerbroo : extremely difficult and would take months of research and study

jerbroo your off my list just for that comment. A smart programmer can spend a few hours looking at html results and come up with an appropriate algo to handle the processing. Now if I asked to go deeper then the first page of results and go into the details then your team would be spending days (not months) on writing logic to follow links into never never land.

I'm afraid ccdantas is right. You're looking at well over 150 hours on a custom database, application, beta testing, server preparation, etc. Even at $500, we all stand to make less than minimum wage on this. Even offshore professionals can't do it for those rates. You really do get what you pay for in this business.
