This is only a temporary bid. I will be able to come up with a more realistic cost and delivery date when more details of the project are disclosed. From the information you have provided, it seems like you're in need of an enterprise architect, not design patterns. Patterns, GOF or not, are just a common language to help communicate our ideas. They will be a part of any good design, but I believe there are many more things that go into a good design. For example, good OOP/OOAD, enough foresight to make the application flexible, extensible, and maintainable, security, modularity, etc. etc. oh, and somewhere at the end performance. Sorry I'm being so vague. The type of design as well as depth of design will depend on what type of application you're developing. How much redundancy, language, upgradability, interoperability with legacy systems, etc. will dictate how complex the system will be. One of the problems with designing is overdesigning a system. For example, if all you're asking for is a email contact script, you won't want the redundant security/vaildation checks you would in a medical application. You also won't generate the amount of support and validation documentation. About langauge. Sometimes languages are constraints, although most languages these days support enterprise architecture pretty well. Java comes to mind with EJB for applications in general, PHP for web applications, and C++ for performance. For your project right now, I'm thinking at least a persistence framework (container), Model-View-Controller (MVC), maybe a factory. Like I said, more details are needed. Whether or not a 3 tier architecture is needed again depends on how complex you want the system (presentation, business logic, back-end). You might elect for this architecture if you need distributed computing on multi-platforms. And, it frees you up to develop in multiple languages, passing objects either through serialization or more elegant techniques such as CORBA, RMI, etc. The difficulty, however, is that the complex it is, the more expensive the initial development costs will be. But, you'll recoup all your costs and then some in debugging, upgrading, and maintainence. A guess a bit on my philosophy of design is in order. I beleive in simplicity first. The simplest design is the best design. After that flexiblity, extensibility, etc. I believe in self-documenting, self-debugging, self-error logging code. IDE's are a godsend, especially ones that include facilities/interoperability with design suites for rapid application development. ie, the use of UML to generate and maintain code ;) Let me know if you have any questions.
