Project Description:
Sociology Research Paper
must be turned in by start of tutorial in the week of March 15
to both Turnitin.com and ELM
In this assignment, you will harness many of the skills you have learned over the course of the
year. You are to produce a synthesis of sociological research on a topic you choose from
the list below. You are required to use at least 5 scholarly sociology sources, either articles in
academic journals or books. You are welcome encouraged to use more.
Objectives: for you to hone your research skills and social science writing skills, and for you to
learn more about an area of sociology. You will therefore be evaluated on the paper's
quality in terms of research, writing, and analysis.
First, you must select a topic to research. Pick one topic from column A and one topic from
column B, and study the work in that area (for example, race and health). You may choose
any combination except class and poverty, which gives you 15 options.
A B
Race Education
Class Globalization
Gender Inequality
Immigration Religion
There are five key steps to this assignment:
1. Find - locate sociology books and/or journal articles that deal with both of these
areas. These must be scholarly works of sociology. Each source should be by a
different author. Textbooks and encyclopedias are not acceptable.
2. Read - learn what sociology has to say about this intersection.
3. Analyze - understand the key themes and questions that have been drawn by your
readings.
4. Synthesize - understand how these works fit together. Do they present different
arguments? Do they build upon one another? Do they disagree with each other?
Identify 2-3 themes present in the sociology literature, and use these themes to craft
a picture of what sociology knows about this area. If you do not find any common
threads, you need to read more articles and select a different mix of sources.
5. Critical reflection - Consider the missing pieces that remain at the end of your
research. What sorts of further study would be useful to know more? What is your
overall evaluation of the sources you have analyzed?
The final draft of your paper should be 5-7 pages in length. it must be printed in 12-point font,
double-spaced with all margins between 1 and 1.25 inches. Include a title page with your
student number and your full name. Number pages. Assignments must be proofread and
error-free. All sources must be cited properly in ASA or APA citation format. Submit the
assignment to Turnitin.com according to the instructions posted on ELM. You must also submit
your assignment via the ELM course website.
How should this research paper be organized?
Let's say you've done steps 1, 2 and 3 above. You have identified appropriate sources and
read them. You have pulled out the key themes from each of the articles and books you've
read. Step 4 is the key step to organizing your paper. To synthesize means to draw out key
themes that the literature on this topic deals with. Your paper should be organized around
those themes. Note that this often means that you need to find more sources, since they
need to group together or speak to each other in a certain way that you can present in your
paper.
Since the goal of the research paper is to tell us what sociology has to say about the topic
you've chosen, your thesis statement will tell the reader exactly this, and it will call for the
paper to be organized accordingly. Below, I offer a fictional example to clarify our
expectations.
Topic: Age and Crime
Thesis Statement: The sociology literature on age and crime is concerned with three themes:
increased victimization of the elderly, juvenile delinquency among youth, and the effect of
rehabilitative treatments on people in different age groups. (Other sorts of thesis statements
might outline a debate in the field, or discuss how later works build on earlier works, for
example).
Organization of the research paper
Introduction
Build toward thesis statement and then a brief mention of what is to follow. "Below, I discuss
each of these three themes in the literature and then offer a critical reflection."
Victimization of the Elderly
This section, and the next two, should discuss the theme from your perspective, as well as
offer specific examples of what you read from particular articles.
Juvenile Delinquency
Same here.
Rehabilitative Treatments
Also same here.
Age and Crime in Sociology – Here is your critical reflection (step 5) section. Sum up the
literature you read briefly, and then offer some thoughts on what you found. Is there a
missing piece, some bias, or a lack of attention to something important? What might further
research reveal? and so on.
You can find formatting information on how to format subheads, as well as how to cite in
APA style and many other useful grammar and punctuation tips, in your Little, Brown writing
guide. Finally, you should know that I have laid out above a fairly standard approach to
writing a literature review for the social sciences. I hope that this exercise will give you some
writing skills that you can carry beyond this class.
Academic Honesty Note: Do not copy any of the above for your paper. Instead, use this as a
model, while writing your paper in your own words. Also, don't copy anything out of any of
the articles and books you have read, unless you put it into quotes and cite it appropriately.
