Set up SMTP server on Dreamhost Private Server

I have a private server hosted with dreamhost. I'd like to install my own SMTP server on my PS. Dreamhost says it is possible, but they don't provide support for it, hence, no installation assistance.I'm looking for someone to set up the ability for me to use it as SMTP server. I have full root/sudo access to the server.
Looking for someone who is hopefully familiar with dreamhost and how they set up their PS. I believe the server is running Debian “Lenny."

To Clarify...This is for SMTP only to be able to send from PHP scripts hosted on the same server. POP3/Webmail/etc is not needed.
