Contest Brief

Hello!
You may remember us from such great contests as:
[url removed, login to view]
Well, Jay and I are back, and we need a wordpress site building. Satgraphic provided us with the very excellent logo and identity, but we need to have a website! I'm hoping you'll be just the one for the job.
You can view our website as it currently stands at [url removed, login to view] - though be warned, it isn't that pretty.
We need the following:

1. Using our logo, identity, colour scheme etc - design+create a wordpress site that suits us

2. We need the following:
--- a) Landing page
--- ---Some things you might want to note:
--- --- i) Specialize in Aviation
--- --- ii) We sell CV and Interview workshops
--- --- iii) SPECIFICALLY for either Pilots OR Aviation Graduates
--- --- iv) we need a 'why us' bit
--- --- v) Jay likes the idea of a Carousel ([url removed, login to view])
--- --- vi) Jay also likes things like RSA Animate([url removed, login to view])
--- b) Blog page
--- --- i) errr... a blog.. will cover aviation news, rumor, job-hunting tips, recruitment.. you get the idea
--- c) About us page
--- --- i) including a cool way to showcase each team-member / trainer
--- d) 'services' page
--- --- i) 2 elements showcasing each workshop with an image + text (and a "book now!" button!)
--- --- --- - For Pilots,
--- --- --- - For Graduates
--- e) Booking page!
--- --- i) place to book the courses...
--- f) tips and tricks page
--- --- i) recruitment processes
--- --- ii) recommended books
--- --- iii) recommended websites
--- --- iv) etc etc
--- g) Contact us
--- --- i) contact form, addresses... you get the idea...

3. we MUST have a 'book now' button we can place anywhere and everywhere!

We would like the page to stand out (who wouldn't!), it MUST use our identity (attached as [url removed, login to view] and .pdf). We want an elegant, preferably fairly minimalist design with a quirky, fun edge. However, the same old double-edged sword, it must be reasonably serious too - as we'll be dealing a lot with large aviation organisations.

As a suggestion - we'd like reference (visual or otherwise) to the fact we provide CV and INTERVIEW skills training for AVIATION graduates and PILOTS.

CRUCIALLY - we want the winner to implement their design - so we'll be giving the winner an admin account on [url removed, login to view] and a week to upload and set up the design before we transfer the winning funds over. Don't worry about text - lorem ipsum will be fine.

About Us:
"AviationShake provides quality training for CV and interview skills, with a focus on the aviation industry. Recent graduates looking for their first step in the industry, pilots looking at aviation as a career and seasoned professionals looking to progress have all benefited from our training. If you're looking for a first job, we can give you the skills and information you need to really succeed in your job hunt, if you're applying for a job we can help you maximise your chances of securing an interview, and if you're preparing for an interview we can give you the skills, practice and many great tips to help you secure that position."

Attached you'll find:
- adobe illustrator file with all our identity vector art
- pdf of the same
- a copy of the brief for our last contest (some useful hints in there!)

Ok folks! The Time is Nigh.

We'll be awarding out winner at 2pm (GMT) today. Hold onto your hats.

Before we do though, I'd like to take this 90-something minutes to reflect on another AviationShake contest.

This one wasn't at all like our last contest - for our logo and identity we had over 200 entries and so much feedback and cross-pollination of ideas that we were truly stunned. In the end our Logo - the bird and the plane won out and we're thrilled to have taken it on as our logo. For this contest we wanted to pull upon the same fantastic user base, but immediately hit a problem - Web designers are not Graphic designers. Now, there's some crossover, to be sure, but a web designer has a much more limited framework - and we imposed a pretty stringent set of conditions. Naturally, the number of entries dropped, but the quality of the designs has still been stunning.

We hoped that we could keep the contest open for all to view the development of ideas, but it was decided early on that this was limiting the number of entries we were getting so we took the tough decision and sealed the contest. This isn't something we wanted to do initially, but the overwhelming evidence from Freelancer and from individuals was that designers felt more comfortable working under a sealed contest.

Last time, we announced the top 5 designs 24 hours out. This time, we refrained - the contest was sealed and so it wouldn't present as much interest or inspire any new developments.

So... Here we are. We're both incredibly excited to award the winner.

Thankyou to everyone who participated, and a special mention to @scvoyager - whose 9-year-old daughter produced a design easily humbling some of the more established designers! Thankyou all for your hard work.

    We'll be back very soon...

We are glad that it brought some joy to people though just even though just a few.We are all lucky she wants to continue with the modeling and singing and she is still inspired to be an actress. One good thing she can make her own website or should say she can continue her work on her own website. I let her know about the rating and she is working with the template so you may get another before this is over.

    Hi Mike,
You may like this one, I don't do any work here since I have enough of my own but I have been teaching my 9yr old daughter how to build websites of her own and she came across your site. One thing lead to another while we sat down together for her wordpress training and this is what she has came up with so far. http://ronswebdesign.com/aviation

Though we may not submit our custom responsive template your idea does make for a good father and daughter project.

    Thanks,
    Ron

      Ron,

I'm stunned - you say your daughter's only 9? It's a phenomenal piece of work - I spent all my time as a 9-year-old falling off skateboards and getting muddy, perhaps my biggest accomplishment was figuring out how to git to the sweets on the top shelf of the cupboards...

As a tip, if you wanted to submit your design anyway (just a screenshot and a link will do), if we don't/can't pick a winner you'll get some share of the prize money anyway.. can't hurt, right?

Many thanks, and a big thank you to your very talented daughter!

Hi Mike, yes she is only 9. She got her first computer at 2, here first magazine photo shot and TV commercial at 3 and destroyed her first computer at 4 thinking she could re-write windows 98 to make it better. LOL Kids these days are amazing in how fast they pick things up.

Her next idea was to have on of the planes fly out of the header image, make a couple of loops and then land in the cloud at the right side. She loves the animation program so I had her make it up using your logo and after she was done I coded it into the template. She comes up with some great ideas and it turned out pretty cool for the first try.

All, we've had a comment asking to seal the contest, so I'll ask all potential entrants the following:

Would you rather the contest be sealed and your work safe, or unsealed and have the benefit of looking at other entries plus feedback to steer your work?

    Many Thanks!

Thanks @JesseLevett - your thinking echos that of my partner-in-crime (Jay). We went through this debate on our last contest, opted to leave it unsealed and took great care to check entries for plagiarism and ip theft (can you believe someone actually tried to pass off the new American Airlines logo - http://goo.gl/RSNQjW - as original! To me. A pilot. just goes to show, eh?)

      Hi JesseLevett,

I'm afraid the contest is now a sealed one - we had many a discussion with Freelancer and amongst ourselves and decided it was the best way forward.

Our preference was always for an open contest, but the weight of opinion seems to be against us - did you know that sealing a web design contest increases the chances of a prize actually being awarded by nearly 15%? I didn't until I pestered Freelancer for the numbers.

It wasn't our first choice, but the numbers play out in favour of sealing, so that's where we are, I hope you understand and aren't turned off from submitting an entry.

      Many Thanks,
      - Mike

    Hello Everyone!

I've sealed the contest by popular request. I hope this will encourage more entries. It's a shame that the entries won't be publicly viewable - we'll work on providing as much feedback as we can to individual entries rather than to the contest as a whole.

    Many Thanks!

Funnily enough, Jay works for a handling agent - it's her experience recruiting for them that drove her to starting aviationshake!

I like the design of that site, very smart - obviously Aviationshake has a very different image to JetSkies, but that doesn't mean the site isn't cool!

I'll await your entry with bated breath :)

Is this for the design and the build-out of the theme? If it includes the build-out is there a specific framework you're wanting to use? If not I assume then the theme will be custom - correct?

    Sorry for all the questions.

      No worries!

It's really up to you, if you have a specific framework you like to use and can produce great work using it, I'm not going to say don't use it! Similarly, if custom is what's needed to get the look you want, custom it is!

I've done lots of work on Wordpress themes myself over the years, (contributed to Aero, Spine and a few others) so nothing is a no-go in this respect. Fill yer boots!

We run two rules in here:

    1. EVERY entry gets rated, and commented on
    2. EVERY question gets answered
    3. learning to count is optional.

I'm asleep for the next few hours, but post the question, if you have it and I'll be back in about 8 hours to answer!

Hi again - yes it's to be wordpress through-and-through.

I've kept it to wordpress because it's something I'm very familiar with, and it needs to continue to be wordpress for two reasons:

      - it makes it easy to redesign/re-deploy the website and website content
      - we use stats and link tracking plugins that are second-to-none
      - because we've gone for expensive, gucci dedicated wordpress hosting (from lightningbase.com if you're interested).

hope this helps inform your entry!

      Many, many thanks

Hi JesseLevett - you're exactly right - the mockup on the pdf/.ai was part of the last contest we ran - not what we want out of this one.

In fact, if you want a pointer (and without being rude to the winner of the last contest - we LOVE our logo) - that mockup is exactly how we DONT want our site to end up looking!

      Thanks for your interest!
