Design a Website Mockup for Law Firm 3-5 pages

  • Status: Closed

Contest Brief

Attached are the wireframe and some content for my law firm website "Rescher Law, P.C." More info about me and my firm are at [url removed, login to view] (redirects to my LinkedIn bio) and [url removed, login to view] (LinkedIn bio for my firm). Where the wireframe says "OJR" at the top, it should say "Rescher Law, P.C." Also, I don't want a man with his arms crossed as in the sketch. It's just a placeholder.

The proposed website content is attached in three PDF files. "Website Content" is the main file, "Other Stuff Industry Expertise" and "Other Stuff Practice Areas" files provide supplementary content.

Some design parameters:
1. There should be 3-5 pages to the website: Home, Bio, and Contact must have separate pages. Practice Areas and Industry Experience should also have separate pages, but expanding boxes containing the lists can be included in the "Other Stuff" section.
2. The Home page shouldn't be very tall. When it loads, you must be able to see the following without any scrolling down: company name; middle section with boxes (unexpanded); ability to access the Contact page; ability to access info about Practice Areas and Industry Experience.
3. I like big, readable navigation buttons and the clean layout of [url removed, login to view] An example of a simple layout by a law firm is [url removed, login to view]

Important design issues:
1. The site must be tasteful, thoughtfully laid out, and uncramped. [url removed, login to view] hits those 3 points
2. A critical goal of the website is to be a call to action for prospective new clients to contact me.
3. THE TWO MOST IMPORTANT PARTS of the website are (1) how my firm name appears and (2) the design of the middle content area in the wireframe (boxes 1, 2 and 3). These boxes will expand to show more details. I need to see collapsed and expanded states designed. The bottom of the wireframe -- the area below the squiggly line -- demonstrates how I'd like these areas to expand. I'd like to see alternate designs for the expanded states.
4. THE KEY TO WINNING THIS CONTEST is the design of the middle content area in the wireframe (boxes 1, 2, and 3). You won't win this contest if any other part of the website design is the main focus of attention; you also won't win if the base and expanded states for those boxes don't work well.
5 Please don't use pictures of people (including pictures of me).
6. Please pay attention to my comments to other designers.

I'd expect JPGs or PNGs of each page/state and final PSDs to be delivered by the winner. Any fonts used must be open web fonts.

Feel free to ask questions in the comments.

Employer Feedback

“SadunKodagoda went above and beyond to deliver a great website design in this contest! The brief was complex and detailed -- I had very specific ideas about some layout and design elements. From the start, SadunKodagoda's work was well designed and professional looking. He was very responsive to my feedback and did a ton of work on the project. Because of his input, the final design looks so much better than I imagined! ”

Final entries should also have expanded and unexpanded states for each part of the middle section, in addition to including all proposed pages of the website. Thank you!

Designers -- please make sure that any further entries include all proposed pages of the website. Reason: when I award the prize, I want it to be clear that you're going to give me designs for all the pages. Thank you!

The contest is starting to look like a two-horse race between #19 nitinatom and #20 SadunKodaGoda. There's a lot that's great about their designs, but their designs have some common flaws: (1) they haven't nailed down the middle section yet; (2) they haven't submitted designs of all five pages of the website; and (3) they use pictures with people in them. Alternative designs would be welcome.

#16 does a nice job of content expansion and focus on the middle area.

Please see revised contest brief. I was making similar design comments to several folks, and I wanted everyone to get on the same page.
    CRITICAL CLARIFICATIONS:
    (1) how the middle section of the wireframe (the 3 boxes) appears and works is the key to winning this competition;
    (2) the website should be short from top to bottom (in unexpanded state) -- when it opens, the following must appear onscreen on a 13" laptop -- (a) firm name; (b) featured practices areas (the 3 boxes); (c) ability to access the separate Bio and Contact pages; (d) ability to access information about Practices areas and Industry Experience.
    (3) The lists for my Practice Areas and Industry Experience should not appear on the Home page -- they need to appear on separate pages or in expanded states.

Entry #1 is just too simple a design.

    Likes:
    1. The box which the cursor is hovering over gets some visual highlighting, and you have to click to get to the expanded state. (I.e., expanded states are triggered by a mouse click.)
    2. The expanded state's runs across the full width of the website, and push everything else down.

    Dislikes:
    1. Design execution is much simpler than I imagined, and colorless.
    2. There don't need to be actual boxes around the logo space, the three middle boxes, etc.
    3. There should be two things in the "Other Stuff" space in the wireframe -- text stating "Practice Areas" and text stating "Industry Experience." That's it. When the cursor hovers over these areas, the text should get highlighted. When the text is clicked, a separate page should be accessed, or there should be expanded states, or something else should happen ... it's up to the designer to determine the best way to present that supplemental content. (It's part of the competition.)

    Comments re #2:
    1. Buttons on bottom well laid out. YouTube not needed.
    2. Font selection is poor -- formal fonts only (more professional).
    3. Horizontal layout is unbalanced within sections.
    4. Emphasize content of three boxes more -- that's the key part of the website (see revised brief). Need expanded states.
    5. Pictures of people other than me aren't helpful or necessary. Something like this might work, but it's in the wrong dimensions: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://aceimageconsulting.com/files/2011/10/Corporate_Solutions-300x198.jpg&imgrefurl=http://aceimageconsulting.com/corporate-solutions/&h=198&w=300&sz=21&tbnid=y2TAdgw1u1W9cM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=136&zoom=1&usg=__RAWmFfUBpoqN-c_cnJGTxqhTg7M=&docid=-UeUF4sllGdzEM&hl=en&sa=X&ei=MaKCUd_iKIz94APMjoB4&ved=0CEEQ9QEwBA&dur=2173

    Hi Owen,

I was wondering if you could clarify how you would like your personal industry experience information distributed between the front page section headed "Industry Experience" and the separate bio page.

    Thanks,
    Mike
