NASA Challenge: Develop 3D Models for Robonaut Simulation-Drill with and without Battery

  • Status: Closed
  • Prize: $100
  • Entries Received: 12
  • Winner: erpb12

Contest Brief

We (NASA) need to develop a number of high resolution 3D models to be used for Robonaut simulations. These 3D models are to be developed based on photographs of real items (see attached files). These simulated objects would be used for various grasp and manipulator testing.

This particular challenge is to build a 3D model of a drill with and without a battery. This item will be used by the Robonaut team in the development of vision and grasping controls to identify and localize the Drill and Drill Battery to replace a battery on a cordless drill.

Submissions should include models for a standalone drill, and a drill with a battery.

There is a scale in the attached imagery is in inches. All final model submissions must be delivered in on of the following formats: .prt (Solidworks, ProE); .step or .stp; .iges; .stl; .dae. NOTE: Freelancer submissions will need to be image file views of your model. If you win the contest, you will then send/transfer the model files to NASA via email, dropbox, etc.

All entries will be judged on the accuracy, quality, and fidelity (detail) of the model produced. Note that where highly similar top submissions are produced, the submission entered first will win.

Employer Feedback

“erpb12 did an great job of creating a detailed 3D model of a Power Drill & Battery for use in our NASA Robonaut simulation. This was a contest and his was the winning submission.”

I"m afraid it is still closed. You might try appealing to the Freelancer tech support since it was an upload error. They would have to help you get an exception. We won't be completing judging for a few days, so if you can work it out, you may have a chance.

Great feedback. It is interesting that this challenge seems to be the only one with that specific input. Note that we are not requiring micro-level accuracy, but simply a 3D model that comes as close to the photograph as possible. Thanks.

This is the first of these contests I have looked at. Does it have to have the internals modelled (motors, some electrics, some wires, and a fully opening and shelled case with screws) or can it just be shelled in most places on the inside aside from a accurate battery compartment and battery and exterior?

I am a freelance 3D artist who works with Autodesk Maya software , I would like to know that is it possible to send file as obj format or it has to be done by industrial software like Solidworks?

The package is not crucial as long as it can export to one of the file formats listed in the brief: .prt (Solidworks, ProE); .step or .stp; .iges; .stl; .dae.

    Good Morning,
the rendering of the images they need to level of realism?

The minimum requirement is for the model. Model accuracy is the highest priority. Since this is a contest, accurate models with photo-realistic texture may have an advantage over those without. So realisting rendering may be helpful, but is not mandatory.

We just uploaded a close up photo of the bottom of the battery, the side label on the drill, and the small label on the top of the base of the drill. Hope that you all find it helpful.

We are just looking for translating the photos into 3D models accurately, so no redesign is necessary.

Hi! Working with my team on it! Do the renders have to be textured or only model is evaluated?

Great question. Textured models will evaluate higher than models only. Thanks.
