NASA Challenge: Software Applications using NASA's Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN) Protocols
- Status: Closed
- Prize: $500
- Entries Received: 49
- Winner: betafind
Contest Brief
Background: The world’s leading space agencies have agreed that future spacecraft will communicate with Earth and among themselves using a new Solar System Internet (SSI) based on Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN) technology. DTN is a protocol suite that extends the terrestrial Internet capabilities into highly stressed data communication environments where the conventional Internet does not work well. These environments are typically subject to frequent disruptions, unidirectional links, possibly long delays and high error rates. The DTN architecture is described in RFC 4838 (attached). The DTN protocol suite is mature, but the number of applications that have been developed to utilize the DTN protocol suite components has been limited. NASA has identified several applications that would be useful for various mission scenarios in delayed/disrupted environments, such as file transfer, text messaging and video messaging among others, however NASA is interested in other application ideas that take advantage of the DTN protocol suite.
Objective: To conceptualize applications that can take advantage of the DTN protocol suite and provide benefit space and/or terrestrial users.
- The submissions should include a description of what the application will do, how it makes use of the DTN protocol suite and the benefits for space and/or terrestrial users.
- Enhancements to existing applications that become delay/disruption tolerant by using the DTN protocol suite are also valid submissions.
- Submissions will be rewarded for creativity and potential value to space and/or terrestrial users.
Submissions: Submissions should include a description of the application concept including descriptions of what the application can do, how it would be used, how it uses DTN, and why it is useful. Submissions can include graphics or other media to help explain the concept via diagrams, user interface concepts, etc.
The winning submission will be selected based on the the following:
- functionality - does the proposed application do something useful?
- feasibility - can the proposed application and supporting architecture be reasonably built?
- usability - will the proposed application be something users (in the public) will want to use?
- creativity - is the proposed application concept original and unique?

Do we need to inform you here if we have add some contents/made some chances in our submissions? (I would believe that you will get notice from individual submissions if we have done so, right?)

I'm actually not sure. On the size, I would estimate a single page would be good. As for the number of images you can upload with a submission, I'm not sure. It seems that I've seen 8-10, but I don't know if that is limited or not. Maybe an experience Freelancer can tell us. Yes, you can use the description and comment field if that helps. I think the preference is to use uploaded images rather than the comment field.

Dear Manager / Reviewer / Supervisor,
Thanks for your kind reply. I am starting to run the C & CPP Codes from http://sourceforge.net/projects/dtn/?source=typ_redirect in Bloodshed Dev-C++ 4.9.9.2 now and hopefully I will design your Application soon in the coming days. I have read the contest requirements and guidelines once again and I am sorry for the previous delivery and I will come back with a new Application Document for Earth Interface soon.
I am hoping for the best and praying to Jesus for guiding me in the right direction. Thank you for listening to me.

Reposting some of the links that might be useful to folks: the official DTN website is: http://www.dtnrg.org/ If you are interested in DTN code, there are several implementations available. See http://sourceforge.net/projects/dtn/ . Also, just to clarify (again): We are seeking software applications that use existing/commodity hardware and infrastructure. We are not interested in submissions that propose new infrastructure, satellites, communications links, beacons, etc.

Dear Manager / Reviewer / Supervisor,
I understood your review comments on Entry # 32 that it may get rejected as it had no Application Overview. I went through the Links given by your end:
http://www.dtnrg.org/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/dtn/
I found that the codes are in tgz (UNIX). Can we have the links for codes in Windows (ZIP or RAR) formats? My machine is DELL Vostro - Windows 7 and I can start working from tomorrow if it is available to improve my star ratings from 1 star to 5 stars asap.
Thanks for listening.

In the briefing of this contest it is mentioned that the objective is to concepualize an application. Does this mean that it need not be developed?

Just a note that we decided to go ahead and seal the submissions to provide a bit more protection for freelancers to submit their ideas without worrying that someone else will take credit or copy their idea. Good luck.

Read the brief, study how DTN works, come up with an idea for an application that is useful and uses the DTN protocol and then submit your idea.

I am posting my document and I have included only one diagram. I have explained everything in brief and all the details will be submitted on request including every minute part. The document is written without copying from anything. Diagrams will be made by me from scratch wherever required,

Currently we are only planning for one prize, but if we find multiple ideas that are things we think are worth pursuing, we would pay for those submissions as well.
