Contest Brief

This contest is intended to help me to write one chapter (or scene) of my science fiction story. I need your help to come up with the idea of how this chapter should go. Details below.

If you have a great idea, I hope you will submit it to this contest.

Each contest entry should contain these two (2) items:
1. A synopsis of your idea for the chapter.
2. A sample paragraph or excerpt of the chapter you propose.

I will judge your idea as well as I can. If you win, I get to use your idea in my chapter, and your paragraph (maybe even word for word). You get the money.

I am writing a science fiction story that I expect to self-publish. The story takes place on another planet (Sonik) where humans have a small outpost. The two species of native people there are the “fairies” and the “tarlocks”.

There is one chapter that I have some trouble coming up with an idea for. This chapter is where Robert Vasquez (the protagonist and only human), Copper-san, Ink-san, and Hunger-tar (and the coach driver and guards) take a journey on a stage coach pulled by beasts through a treacherous wilderness.

Goals that I have for this chapter are:
• Impress on the reader how treacherous this forest is.
• Introduce one or more strange types of wild animal(s) there. (Maybe you would invent them as part of your proposal.)
• Give the travel group some difficulties or challenges during the trip.
• Have the group encounter native bandits (either in passing or as a confrontation).
• Coordinate the story with the adjacent (before and after) chapters.
• Add some value to the book (not make the book worse).
If you have a great idea that would require adjustment to the adjacent chapters, I would likely cooperate with that.

See the attached files.
I have:
◆ The chapter before the journey (draft quality) (before the chapter you propose)
◆ The chapter after the journey (draft quality). (after the chapter you propose)
◆ A description of the characters with illustrations.
◆ Find more information about the story in the three links below.

It's done. I awarded the grand prize to Faith ( #6 ) because I wanted her monkey-bats and some of her other ideas. I budgeted myself another $100 budget to choose runner-up winners. After awarding the grand prize, the web page revealed all of your runner-up prices. Many of you demanded $100 for second place, which I was not willing to pay since then I could only afford 1 runner-up entry. I wanted Sasha's entry ( #11 ) for his bandit encounter, prose, and other details. That was $75 and then I only had $25 left to spend. There were only two entries that were cheap enough to choose from. I chose #14 (Ravi) for some of his animals. I also liked his lightening fox idea but am afraid they might be too unrealistic. I am trying to make the book more science fiction and less fantasy. Thank you all again for your work and effort. I wish you the best.

I see the contest is ending in a few minutes. I will decide on a winner by late tomorrow. Thank you to all who contributed to the contest. Especially thanks to those who remembered to include bandits. There were many desirable ideas presented. I apologize in advance for all the good ideas that won't win. I can only choose 1 first-place $100 winner by contest rules. And I expect to choose one or two runner-up winners depending on the runner-up price that you set on your entry and if it is a compatible idea to combine with the first-place winner.

I may need to have one or two second-place winners so I can combine the ideas that I like most. After the first-place award is given, I may need to negotiate with second-place choices to see if they will let me use their idea for a reduced price.

    Hey Jimm.
So I've looked for the blue button but I can't see it. If it's not too much trouble perhaps we could communicate via the platform's official message platform so that I can attach the document.
Let me know if that's ok with you. I'm really excited about the project and I wouldn't want to miss out on presenting what I have.

Receiving a contest entry through the messaging does not work well. Then I would not be able to mark you as the winner so you could get the $100 prize.

Explanation of the star ratings. So far I have two entries so I rated them from one star to five compared against each other. One means "No, but thanks for trying." and five means "Acceptable or better".

Thanks Mark. I see now the other contest I checked was a sealed contest. I checked an unsealed contest and it was $0.50 to seal an entry. I cannot attempt to submit an entry to my own contest so I tested another.

Yeah, that's about the only way of doing it from your side. The platform's useful like that. You're making the right call, if people feel they need to seal, they can. That's what I'd do. Sealing, frankly, is a complete waste of money. As soon as an entrant submits anything copyright is automatically assigned to their original work, assuming it is their own work. If anyone gets nibble and quick with anyone else's content, they can get something done about it. The law automatically favors the original copyright holder. Anyway, all the best with your contest. My regards, M : )
