3. A book like The Memoirs of Glückel of Hameln is not frequently taught in a Reformation class. What does a book like this add to our understanding of early modern Europe? Should it be a central part of Reformation courses? Why or why not?

To answer these questions, you will focus on The Memoirs of Glückel of Hameln. You may feel free to bring in additional material from the sourcebook, textbook, or ilearn readings, as you see fit, but that is not necessary. You may also write your own question, as long as you E-mail it to me (lalisy@sfsu.edu) and get it confirmed by Wednesday, 11/13. Your E-mail must include one question and a thesis statement answering that question.

I am most interested in the ways in which you read and interpret the primary text. This is not a research paper, and I do not expect you to do additional reading beyond the textbook, sourcebook, and three treatises themselves. Please do not quote from on-line sources like Wikipedia, please do not quote from my lectures, and please do not use on-line resources like Spark Notes.

This assignment should be 5 pages long. It is fine if the essay is longer than five pages, but it must at least go onto the fifth page. It must be typed in Times New Roman 12-point font, must be double-spaced with sensible margins, and must include footnotes (or parenthetical citations) and a bibliography (or Works Cited page). It must have a coherent thesis statement and clear structure. We will be talking in class about what constitutes a good thesis statement and a well-organized essay. You may use any established style of citation with which you are comfortable (Chicago Style, MLA, etc.), but you must be consistent and use one of the established styles.

I took a reformation course, HIST 355, back in 2001. You might do better with a project on this one. $55 seems pretty low for something like this, to me at least.
