I was the last graduate student of a very successful professor whose career spanned 30+ years. All of his graduate students are writing a book in which we recount our own experiences in his lab. I want to have an illustration that encompasses my experience - namely, that he was already on his way out and was only marginally attentive to my work. Since he hailed from the American Southwest, I had this image in mind:
A professor - dressed like a mixture of a North American cowboy/South American gaucho - is riding on a horse into the setting sun in a desert scene. He looks content - like a sort of smile indicating he feels he did a good job. In the foreground, a graduate student - stressed out with multiple draft manuscripts in his arms - is running after him holding out one of the manuscripts out in front of him trying to get his attention...but to no avail.
